Micron has announced it will discontinue the Crucial brand, bringing an end to its affordable SSD and memory module offerings, according to initial coverage by VideoCardz. The company revealed on Wednesday that shutting down this consumer-oriented division will allow it to “enhance inventory management and customer service for major strategic partners in rapidly expanding markets,” essentially referring to artificial intelligence firms.

This decision represents a significant setback for computer enthusiasts and DIY system builders, who are currently navigating dramatically increasing memory costs driven by heightened demand from AI sector players. Take OpenAI as an example — the company has arranged agreements with SK Hynix and Samsung to produce as many as 900,000 DRAM modules monthly for its Stargate initiative.
With Crucial’s exit, the market will lose another consumer-focused memory supplier, which could worsen the worldwide memory supply constraints. The surging appetite for RAM is already affecting pricing structures at companies like CyberPowerPC, Framework, and Raspberry Pi, while HP has suggested it may either increase device costs or reduce memory specifications in its products.
Micron plans to maintain Crucial product shipments through February 2026’s conclusion and will continue honoring warranties and providing customer assistance beyond that date.
